Joselo - Sobriedad

Difficulty: difficulty - Intermediate Intermediate

Mexico

Joselo Rangel is a native of Minatitlan, Puerto de Veracruz. He went to university, however, in Mexico City, at UAM (Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana). It was there that he teamed up with Ruben Albarran to create the legendary Café Tacuba. “Sobriedad” is from his recent solo effort, Lejos.

Jeremías música - Uno y uno igual a tres

Difficulty: difficulty - Intermediate Intermediate

Venezuela

Viewer Discretion Advised

Carlos Eduardo López Ávila, known to most of the world as Jeremías, (his nombre escénico) was born in London, where his parents were studying, but he returned with them to their native Venezuela at the tender age of two. Billboard describes his music, with its blend of trova, pop, salsa and rock as mestizo (which of course usually refers to a person of mixed blood).

Liquits - Jardín View Series

Difficulty: difficulty - Beginner Beginner

Mexico

If there was an entry for “trippy” in the English-Spanish dictionary we think there would be a photo of Liquits sitting there next to it. Lyrically, this neat little tune is not as simple as it at first sounds, and is loaded with double meanings and word plays—we’ve tried to point out a few! Have fun (you know you like to sing)—vocab quiz on naked stork firefly poppies first thing Monday.

Juanes - Para tu amor View Series

Difficulty: difficulty - Beginner Beginner

Colombia

It was his father who gave him the nickname “Juanes,” created by combining his first name (Juan) and the beginning of his second name (Esteban). Pops may have realized that it made for a perfect pop idol calling card, as he also taught him to play guitar.

Estado Falcón - Locos de la Vela - Part 1 View Series View This Episode

Difficulty: difficulty - Intermediate Intermediate

Venezuela

Vela, a word often used for “candle,” or “sail,” can also mean “wakefulness,” as in “vigilance.” It’s related to the verb velar, “to stand watch.” The name of the port city of La Vela de Coro refers not to the “sails” of merchant ships (as many assume) but rather to this town’s role as a “lookout” point for marauding pirates. One-eyed peg-legs are now less common, but the carnivalesque annual festival of Los Locos continues on.

Axel Fernando - ¿Qué estás buscando?

Difficulty: difficulty - Beginner Beginner

Argentina

Axel Fernando entered the Conservatorio Nacional Superior de Música in Buenos Aires at only eight years old, but dropped out in his early teens, wishing to focus more on academics, and less on music. To the delight of adoring fans throughout the world, he got serious again about music at seventeen, and hasn’t looked back since.

Belanova - Por ti View Series

Difficulty: difficulty - Intermediate Intermediate

Mexico

Yes, Belanova may be a shill for Pizza Hut Mexico, but we are not going to hold that against this fine synth-pop dance trio who came together in 2000 in Guadalajara. How did the band create the name Belanova? An entrevista en español in Enkidu magazine tells all.

Playa Adícora - Francisco - Part 2 View Series View This Episode

Difficulty: difficulty - Intermediate Intermediate

Venezuela

Francisco sees potential for creation and innovation in a wide range of materials: drift wood, shells, seeds, goat skin, even plastic debris. He is speaking with the governor about creating a tallerr, or workshop, that can be used to teach artistic skills to the young people of the area, as well as to showcase the work of other local artisans.

Mach y Daddy - Las solteras

Difficulty: difficulty - Intermediate Intermediate

Panama

¡Oye Mamicitas y Papicitos! Forget about the Spanish! Get up off your colas, it’s time to perrear! Turn up the volume and put your hands in the air! Tell ‘em that you’re single (aunque si no!) Stand up right now and muévete that cintura! (You know you want to!)

Javier García - Tranquila View Series

Difficulty: difficulty - Intermediate Intermediate

Cuba, Spain

Javier Garcia. Keep your ear to the sound system, we’re catching his tunes popping up at downtown lounges and restaurants. Come along for a ride as our man is at the helm of the tranquila bus. This song was Javier’s first release, and garnered gold records in three countries. It’s guaranteed to have you moving “suave, suavecito.”

Belanova - Me Pregunto View Series

Difficulty: difficulty - Beginner Beginner

Mexico

Bella Belanova singer Denisse Guerrero studied fashion in Mexico before she became a rock sensation. We wonder if the supersized collar she’s sporting in this video for "Me Pregunto" was an extra-credit project from back in her university days.

SiZu Yantra - Bienvenido

Difficulty: difficulty - Adv-Intermediate Adv-Intermediate

Mexico

Bienvenido al sueño is the first solo effort by the artist formerly known as Rubén Albarrán—of Café Tacuba / Café Tacvba fame. (‘Tacuba’ became ‘Tacvba’ after a lawsuit, according to this Wikipedia entry.) Check out Sizu’s wild video to the album’s title track. Nice hats, no?

Playa Adícora - Francisco - Part 3 View Series View This Episode

Difficulty: difficulty - Intermediate Intermediate

Venezuela

Francisco’s little Taller Arte is guarded by the ever-vigilant Señor Coco, who never sleeps and sees all! Taller means “workshop,” and, as in English, this word can have a range of meanings, such as a place where artisans create, a place where things are fixed, or an event where people get together to work on ideas.

Babasónicos - Yegua View Series

Difficulty: difficulty - Intermediate Intermediate

Argentina

Viewer Discretion Advised

In most Spanish dictionaries una yegua is “a mare,” as in “a female horse.” But in Babasónicos’ homeland, Argentina, it can also mean “a sexy thing.” To settle on your own definition of this song’s title, you may just have to watch! (By the way, this is currently one of the hottest bands in Rock en Español.)

Belanova - Entrevista - Part 1 View Series View This Episode

Difficulty: difficulty - Adv-Intermediate Adv-Intermediate

Mexico

Why is it that some musicians have such synergy together? Belanova describes the fusión that is created when each distinct musical personality comes together, and how this unique “fusion” has brought them from after-class practice to stadium-filled tours.
